ByteCraft

An original sandbox-adventure homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

ByteCraft brings mining, exploration, building, crafting, survival, and adventure to the limitations of an authentic 8-bit console.

Explore a large procedurally generated world divided into distinct surface regions and deep underground layers. Mine through varied terrain, gather resources, build structures, craft equipment, trade with regional inhabitants, and defend yourself against creatures lurking both above and below the surface.

Your changes persist. Blocks you mine, structures you build, objects you place, items you collect, and major accomplishments can be preserved through the game’s battery-backed save system.

Features

  • A large 1024×1024 logical world
  • Eight distinct surface regions with multiple underground depth bands
  • Procedurally generated biomes, caves, ores, trees, and structures
  • Mining and persistent block placement
  • Crafting, tools, equipment, and progression
  • Woodworking with doors, chests, workbenches, signs, fences, platforms, and more
  • Forestry, tree growth, ladders, and underground travel
  • Regional NPCs and item trading
  • Multiple enemy types with combat, loot, health, damage, death, and respawning
  • Simulated sand and water
  • Day-and-night phases and biome-specific weather
  • Persistent storage and recoverable save data
  • Original NES graphics, animation, music, and sound effects
  • A generated Badlands dungeon
  • The two-phase Stone Warden boss encounter

Your Journey

ByteCraft does not force you down a single path.

You can remain near the surface and construct a home, gather materials for better equipment, travel across the world in search of unfamiliar biomes, descend into increasingly dangerous underground regions, or seek out the dungeon hidden beneath the Badlands.

Those who survive the descent may eventually confront the Stone Warden and claim the relic fragments it guards.

Authentic NES Homebrew

ByteCraft is written in 6502 assembly using the ca65 and ld65 toolchain. It uses an expanded MMC5 cartridge architecture with banked program memory, dedicated graphics data, persistent save memory, deterministic world generation, and systems designed around the real limitations of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

This is not a modification, ROM hack, or port of an existing game. ByteCraft is an original independent homebrew project.

How to Play

The download contains an NES ROM file. A modern NES emulator with MMC5 mapper support is required.

For the most accurate experience, use an emulator with proper NES 2.0 header support and battery-backed save-file persistence.

Controls

- Left/right dpad: move left/right.

- Up dpad: jump.

- Down dpad: crouch/descend ladder.

- A btn: interact/attack, attacking is prioritized.

- B btn: contextual btn. (depends on what is selected in hotbar; first icon is for placing blocks, second icon is to break blocks, etc.)

- Select btn: Cycle through action hotbar.

- Start btn: pause. (saves game)

- B+Start: opens crafting menu.

- B+Select: cycles through placeable blocks.

Development Status

ByteCraft remains under active development and validation. Although its major gameplay systems are implemented, development builds may still contain bugs, balance issues, visual quirks, or emulator-specific behaviour.

Bug reports and gameplay feedback are welcome.
